It's the World Cup All Over Again

A Special Guest Post from my friend Narsimha Sarma Veturi who writes beautiful stories at his space - Neither Here Nor There and is an ardent cricket fan. We do regularly chat about cricket on Indiblogger especially about how India are doing. In this post Narsimha turns back the clock and tells us his Favorite World Cup Moments starting from 1992.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first time I saw Cricket live on TV, was also the first time I saw The Cricket World Cup, which was also the first time I saw Sachin Tendulkar bat. Though, he didn’t score much on that day, he was a star already and I saw an expectation being built up steadily within my family members as Ravi Shastri blocked forever, before he came in. I don’t remember much else from that Benson and Hedges Edition, except the two enduring images of Ajay Jadeja’s magnificent catch to dismiss Allan Border in the same match, and that of the South Africans losing their semifinal in dubious circumstances. I thought that there was something illegal happening behind the scenes that let the chase remodeled from 22 off 13 balls, to 22 off 1 ball.

The Wills World Cup 1996 was when the Cricket Fever truly caught up with me, as I watched the whole tournament live on Television. Sachin Tendulkar was a great hero by then, and he lived up to all the hype being the face, and the rest of the body as well, of the Indian Campaign. The best match, however, was, as usual, was against Pakistan. There are a lot of highlights of this match that I can remember till date, right from Siddhu’s classy knock, to Jadeja’s destruction of WaqarYounis. The Venkatesh Prasad sendoff to Aamir Sohail is still a popular Youtube classic. However, nothing prepared me for the heartbreak of the Kolkata Semifinal. Azhar won the toss and put Sri Lanka in, a decision which even he thought he regretted. Having seen off India’s prime tormentors in the league game, Jayasuriya and Kaluwitharana in the first over, I thought it would be a cake walk for us. Even the target of 258 was something I thought Sachin would help India achieve, until he got stumped off Jayasuriya for 65, which remains painful and haunting till date. The rest is a piece of history, I can never forget, nor I would want to particularly recall, suffice to say that I cried into the night, hugging my pillow, making it wet with my tears, before falling asleep, eventually.

1999 World Cup was a kind of mixed bag, where our chances were forever impacted by our narrow loss to Zimbabwe, which continues to haunt me whenever I think of that particular campaign in England. Owing to summer holidays, and travelling to marriages, I could not catch much of the action live. We had a couple of good wins against England and Pakistan, not to forget the demolition of Sri Lanka. The best match was against England. The tournament rules had it that the rain affected games, will be continued as they were, next day. England were in a comfortable position after some 20 odd overs chasing a modest total when the rain interrupted. The next day, when the match resumed, Srinath got Thorpe LBW, and England crumbled under pressure. Still, a largely forgettable campaign for us, as we didn’t compete well in the Super Sixes, except, against Pakistan. The most enduring image will be the end of the greatest ODI ever, which earned the chokers tag to the South Africans in their Semi Final against Australia. It can’t be scripted better.

The 2003 edition was a largely successful campaign for us, except for the final, especially after the disastrous tour to NZ days before the World Cup. Being a bit more pragmatic at that time, I could see that Australians were the clear favorites. A side story worth mentioning, was that Sourav won the toss on the day and put the Aussies in on a flat track, a regrettable decision, much like the one Azhar made against the Lankans in 1996, both of the matches ended in a defeat for us. Another side story was that Mohammad Kaif’s house was pelted with stones by angry mob after India’s defeat to Australia in the league stage, and it was heartening to see India comeback in an emphatic fashion, being undefeated against any other team they faced. Sachin Tendulkar scored a mountain of runs again, and still the hopes depended on him for the major part of the series. It didn’t help for the excitement of the campaign that India had to face Kenya in the Semis, which I felt was not worth a contest on such a big stage. The best match of the 2003 World Cup, for us, was again, against Pakistan. I don’t think any words would justify the excitement felt by the Indians after that match. Stephen Fleming’s classy, match winning knock of 134* against South Africa in a rain curtailed game, and Bevan and Bichel’s jailbreak against England were also extremely fascinating to watch.

The 2007 World Cup hosted by the West Indies, was a disaster for India and for ICC as well, as the edition turned out to be poorly managed and poorly attended. If India’s loss to Bangladesh in their opening match was painful to sit through, the collapse against Sri Lanka was every bit taxing on the Indian Fan. I saw the match against Sri Lanka on a giant screen, specially brought by our college for the match, and I vowed never to watch a WC match on a giant screen again. I haven’t followed the rest of the World Cup much, so I don’t remember much about it, except that Australia won it, and they deserved it, exactly like the previous 2 editions.

2 years ago, my friends and their families met for a re-union of sorts, and as part of a game, everyone revealed their best moments in their life. When my turn came, I said that 2nd April 2011, when India won the World Cup with Sachin Tendulkar in the playing XI, contributing throughout the tournament in India’s success, was the best moment of my life, and I still maintain it. It is a culmination of a journey that started in 1992, and a Cricketing Nirvana for me. I saw every match live, cheered for every boundary scored and wicket taken, cheered louder at South Africa’s exit in the QF, because I thought they will definitely have given us a harder time. I shudder to think of what might have happened if we didn't win 2011 World Cup.

So, the 2015 World Cup for, is like trying to fall in love with it all over again, since the 2011 edition fulfilled me beyond my expectations. The wait for it, the journey to it, my own growth as a person, all contributed in making that event a memorable one. I don’t know if the current edition would make me as excited as I was for the past ones. I’m older now and I think I spent all my energy on the final hurrah of 2011. I will watch all the matches, because the tournament still holds a lot of importance for ODI Cricket, of which I’m definitely a fan, but I don’t think I would take a loss as bad as I did in 1996. I’m expecting a Semifinal berth for India, which is a realistic expectation to begin with, but I probably won’t sulk as much if India underwhelms me.

My Review of Team India for the Final game Vs Sri Lanka

Marks for the Indian Players for the match Vs Sri Lanka

Sachin Tendulkar – 2/10 – started off well but could not carry on.

Virender Sehwag – 0/10 – Could not provide the start on the big day, did not learn from previous mistake and wasted a precious referral.

Gautam Gambhir – 7/10 – Batted sensibly and bailed India out of a pressure situation but got out trying to play a loose shot. He should have seen India home.

Virat Kohli – 6/10 – Supported Gautam Gambhir well and was brilliant in the field…

Yuvraj Singh – 7/10 – Struck gold for India when it needed. Took 2 wickets. A great all round performance by him.

MS Dhoni – 8/10 – Decisions payed off and made a matchwinning unbeaten 94 to to ensure the cup comes home this time.

Suresh Raina – 5/10 – fielded superbly.

Harbhajan Singh – 5/10 – bowled well and took the key wicket of Dilshan

Munaf Patel – 4/10 – went wicketless and average bowling performance.

Team – 10/10
Well deserved 10 marks since they played as one!

India Vs Sri Lanka, Final - Match Review

India Vs Sri Lanka – The Final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, 2nd April – Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

India lost a controversial toss and as expected Sangakkara chose to bat first.

India walked in with one change of Sreesanth replacing the injured Ashish Nehra while Sri Lanka came out with 4 changes leaving out one of their most economical bowler of the tournament Ajantha Mendis. Right from the start, the Sri Lankans looked very tentative in their approach. Some brilliant bowling by the Indian pacers backed by spirited work in the field put the Lankans on the back foot and ensured they reach their lowest powerplay score till now that of 31/1 at the end of 10 overs. Dilshan tried to stick around but was shown the way for 33 runs.  Sangakara and Jayawardene, two of the seniormost players, steadied the ship with a good partnership of 62 until Sangakkara was dismissed by Yuvraj for 48. Silva and Kapugadera did not last long. But M Jayawardene played beautifully and together with Parera and Kulasekara took the SL innings to a very competitive total of 274/6 at the end of 50 overs.

Jayawardene scored his century and played a gem of an innings, performing in a high pressure game needs  a lot of grit, determination and concentration and he showed the world just what a class player he is! It was interesting to see how the highly rated Indian batting prowess would respond now.
It was a disappointing start to the Indian innings with Sehwag getting out for a duck. Sachin showed glimpses of a big innings but could not carry on. Pressure was intense. But Gambhir stuck on and with the able support from Virat managed to bring the run chase back on track. Virat got out for 35 and there was an unexpected player walking in. Dhoni entered the scene at 114/3 and went on to score an unbeaten 91 putting up a 109 run match winning partnership with Gambhir.

4 needed from 7 balls when Dhoni hit a massive six… the crowds erupted… firecrackers dazzled in the dark of the night sky… the players rushed out to the field… India had got the CUP! The celebrations had just begun! But will surely continue for many more years to come!!!

India Vs Sri Lanka - The ICC World Cup Final, Match Preview

India Vs Sri Lanka – The final of the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup

India and Sri Lanka - Possibly two of the best teams in the World cup so far deserving to be where they are today.

Sri Lankans have been by far one of the most consistent teams till now. Their top order has clicked on most occasions and set a good foundation for them. Their only concern is the lower middle order that looks a bit uncomfortable in the middle. In the event of the top 4 failing to click in a crunch game as big as the World cup final how the rest of the batting handles the pressure and takes control of the situation will be worth watching once again. They have a pretty safe pair of hands in the field too. With a lethal spin attack and a stingy pace attack, there is not an iota of doubt that it’s their bowling that’s perhaps their greatest weapon. Though there are talks of a possibility of Murli and Mathews missing the finals due to injuries but that seems unlikely to me that they will be made to sit out for what could turn out to be the biggest day of their career.

India on the other hand has played like a team so far. Everyone seems to be playing their parts well and bailing the team out of pressure. However there are aspects where the team can look forward to making an improvement. Fielding has enhanced in the successive matches and they need to keep it like that. Their batting has depth something that the Lankans lack and looks formidable with someone or the other always rising to the occasion. The bowling has been good in patches and with injury concerns looming large over their most economical bowler, Nehra, it will be interesting to see what bowling combination Dhoni walks out with in the middle!

Both the teams look as confident as ever, both have sensed the taste of defeat in the finals by the same team Australia and neither will look to experience the same! Come Saturday and it will be a royal battle for sure!!

Key Battles to look out for in the match between India Vs Sri Lanka, 2nd April - Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

1. MS Dhoni vs Kumar Sangakarra

2. Sachin Tendulkar, Virendar Sehwag vs Lasith Malinga

3. Sri Lankan lower middle order vs Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh

The Finalists of the ICC World Cup 2011

And So presenting to you the finalists of the ICC World Cup 2011 -

Two Asian teams for the first time in the history of the Game ---

INDIA And SRI LANKA

My Review of Team India for the Semi Final game Vs Pakistan

Marks for the Indian Players for the match vs Pakistan

Virender Sehwag - 5/10 – gave a fiery start to the innings, like he always does, but could not carry on.

Sachin Tendulkar – 8/10 – gave a fiery start to the innings and carried on, stopped just short of his hundred, played a brilliant innings.

Gautam Gambhir – 3/10 – couldn’t build on the start.

Virat Kohli – 1/10 – was good in the field but contributed just 9 runs...

Yuvraj Singh – 4/10 – failed with bat but worked magic with the ball.

MS Dhoni – 6/10 – Good captaincy tactics and stuck on for a while with the bat too.

Suresh Raina – 5/10 – Made some very valuable runs in the end helping India build up a formidable total.

Harbhajan Singh – 4/10 – picked up the key wickets of Umar Akmal and Shahid Afridi.

Zaheer Khan – 3/10 – provided the initial breakthrough though more was expected frm him.

Ashish Nehra – 4/10 – the most economical, bowled a number of dot balls, overall bowled quite tactfully

Munaf Patel – 3/10 – got 2 wickets including the key wicket of Haffeez who was going pretty strong and bowled the only maiden for India.

Overall Points

Batting – 6/10

Bowling – 5/10

Team – 6/10

India Vs Pakistan, Semi Final - Match Review

India Vs Pakistan – 2nd Semi Final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, 30th March –Mohali

India made one change from the previous game, Nehra called in for Aswin and Pakistanis walked in unchanged. The day started off perfectly for the Indians with the hosts winning the toss and electing to bat first. Sehwag and Sachin provided a perfect fierce start to the team. If there is a thing called luck, then Sachin (85 runs) had it in abundance. He was provided not one, not two but three lifelines, which proved to be very costly to the Pakistanis. The only thing he missed out on was his record of 100th international century. What further helped matters was the opposition’s sloppy work in the field, catches being dropped, and the overall poor display of fielding which helped Indian conjure a total of 260.

In view of the not so good Indian bowling performance, the total looked every bit defendable.

In spite of a promising start, the Pakistanis could never really lift their game and build the momento. It all came down to Misbah ul Haq who batted sensibly and tried to stay at the wickets. He hit some shots toward the end but alas it was too late! The Men in Green were just outclassed by the Men in Blue!

It was a day where things seemed to be destined…where everything went right in the favor of the home team - India! Moreover, they played as a team and looked ferocious. Overall, it was good game of cricket!
Now its time for the Finals…The Last match – INDIA Vs SRI LANKA, The countdown begins!!!

Sri Lanka - The first team to March into the Finals!

Sri Lanka Vs New zealand – 1nd Semi Final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, 29th March - Columbo

It came as no surprise, Sri Lanka won the game in Columbo, their home ground but not without some hiccups! After a Chasing a total of 217, Sri Lanka were off to good start, the top 3 playing their parts pretty well! It was somewhere in the middle they stuttered which made things difficult for them. But they had to do it in the end, with the entire stadium cheering for their home team, and for the man who was playing his last match on the home turf - Yes! Muttiah Murlidharan!!

So, then Sri Lanka becomes the first team to enter the finals,
who will be the second one??
India Or Pakistan

4 and a half hours to go... The countdown has already begun. There is already some news that the rain Gods are bracing themselves up to spoil the party! Lets hope for the best!!!

Till the match begins, you can get a hang of the two teams by reading the preview here.

India Vs Pakistan - 2nd Semi Final, Match Preview

India Vs Pakistan – 2nd Semi Final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

The mother of all battles, the war without weapons… The match that is worthy of a cult status…

Indian top order has been in good form with Sachin, Sehwag scoring the bulk of the runs along with Yuvraj Singh. But Gambhir has struggled in the middle right through and Kohli, after a scintillating start against the Bangladeshis has not done much either. But the addition of Suresh Raina has provided some much needed solidity to the lower order as Dhoni is also out of sorts. The bowling is led by Zaheer Khan who has taken the bulk of the wickets along with Yuvraj Singh. Harbhajan Singh needs to play a vital part against the Pakistan team if India is to do well in this game as the pressure will be huge.

Pakistan batting has struggled almost all through the tournament though it has had its moments. Hafeez and Asad Shafiq have added solidity to the top order while the middle order is strengthened by Younis Khan and Misbah Ul Haq. The lower order has hard hitters in Umar Akmal, Abdur Razzaq and Shahid Afridi. It is their bowling however that is very strong and Afridi is the leading wicket taker in this edition of the world cup 2011. He also has for company Hafeez and Abdur Rehman along with Ajmal to support him in the spin department. The fast bowling is also going strong with Umar Gul playing a vital role for them. There is still suspense whether Shoaib Akthar will play or not!!

The fielding may not be very important in this tie and it will be interesting to see which side that fields badly.

Key Battles to look out for in the match between India Vs Pakistan, 30th March - Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali, Chandigarh, India

1. Pakistan top Order Vs Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh

2. M S Dhoni Vs Shahid Afridi

3. Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh Vs Umar Gul, Shahid Afridi

Sri Lanka Vs New Zealand – 1st Semi Final, Match Preview

Sri Lanka Vs New Zealand – 1st Semi Final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

The first semi final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 is upon us. It is a repeat of the 2007 edition when Sri Lanka beat New Zealand comfortably riding on a century by the then Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene and 4 wickets from the spin master Muttiah Murlitharan.

New Zealand batting has been firing in patches and one can say that all their batsmen Brendon Mc Cullum, Jesse Ryder, Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor have had decent hits in the middle. The middle order of Scot Styris, Jacob Oram and Kane Williamson played well in the last match Vs South Africa. Their bowling is led by talismanic skipper Daniel Vettori and he will be ably supported by Tim Southee, Nathan Mc Cullum, Jacob Oram and Scot Styris. But it is their fielding which is their strongest suit. Guptill in the game against South Africa was just awesome, he was everywhere… diving, flying, sliding… One of the most brilliant fielding displays of recent times!!!

The Sri Lankans on the other hand have all their top order batsmen in a pink of form with Upul Tharanga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene all having scored hundreds at some point or the other till now in this World Cup!! Infact the opening combo has two 200 run partnerships in the current tournament, one of them unbeaten!!! The middle order though is a bit of a concern for them as they have not spent enough time in the middle till now. The bowling is led by the eccentric Lasith Malinga and he has for support the old war horse Muttiah Murlitharan. They also have Angelo Matthews, Rangana Herath and Ajantha Mendis who can deceive the Kiwis with their variations. But the fitness of Murli will be an issue. They also dropped a few catches in the last match Vs England.

On paper this may seem like a pretty one sided affair with everything stacked up against the New Zealanders… The pitch, the conditions, the quality of players, the weather, home crowd support…. But it is who plays better cricket for the duration of 100 overs, soaks up the pressure well and remains calm under tough circumstances will come out trumps.

Key Battles to look out for in the match between Sri Lanka Vs New Zealand, 29th March - R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, Sri Lanka

1. Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene Vs Daniel Vettori, Nathan Mc Cullum

2. Lasith Malinga Vs Brendon Mc Cullum, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor

3. Muttiah Murlitharan, Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath Vs Kiwi Middle-Lower Order

My Review of Team India for the Quarter Final game Vs Australia

Marks for the Indian Players for the match VS Australia

Sachin Tendulkar – 5/10 – soaked up the pressure in a tricky run chase, came up with a steady 50.

Virender Sehwag – 2/10 – did not look fit to me, was scratchy throughout…

Gautam Gambhir – 5/10 – struggled once again, looked scratchy… but made a 50, needlessly got run out.

Virat Kohli – 2/10 – did not contribute with the bat much but was brilliant in the field…

Yuvraj Singh – 8/10 – made a lovely 50, took 2 wickets… won the team the match in the end, got another man of the match!!

MS Dhoni – 4/10 – failed with the bat again but was aggressive with the field placings today!!

Suresh Raina – 6/10 – fielded brilliantly and made a good contribution down the order…

Harbhajan Singh – 4/10 – bowled well for once, but where are the wickets??

Zaheer Khan – 5/10 – brilliant bowling in the middle overs once again from him, took two important wickets…

R Ashwin – 4/10 – took two wickets, was energetic in the field... looks more dangerous than Harbhajan at the moment…

Munaf Patel – 2/10 – looked out of sorts, the Aussies targeted him and got away with it.

Overall Points

Batting – 6.5/10

Bowling – 7/10

Team – 7/10
