Impact of South African Openers in the WT20 2016, India

Opening batsmen will have a huge role to play in India as they will have the responsibility of providing their teams with a flying start while the ball is still hard and new. Scoring tends to become difficult on Indian tracks once the ball loses its shine and the spinners come on, hence making the role of the openers very important indeed. South Africa are blessed with two openers who complement each other very well and both of them are going through a purple patch which makes it extremely difficult for the bowlers to contain them.

Hashim Amla

There is not a much calmer figure in world cricket at the moment than Hashim Amla. When his immense ability is combined with his zen-like temperament, there is little that the opposition captain can do to dislodge him. Wristy flicks and powerful square drives are his trademark shots and he plays spin extremely well using his feet to unsettle the line and length of the slower bowlers. Powerful off both back and front foot, with the ability to play on both sides of the wicket, India has been always a favourite place for Amla as he has scored tonnes of runs here in the past in all formats of the game.

He will be a very important component of the South African ammunition since his ability to play spin exquisitely will be a huge positive for them in India.

Impact Rating – 8/10

Quinton de Kock

Quinton de Kock first shot to limelight as a teenager when he grabbed the headlines for South Africa in the U19 World Cup in 2012. He was their highest run scorer and was called up for international duty the very next year. Since then, barring a small phase where he was out of form, he has been a regular in the South African team.

He is a very attacking left handed bat and likes going after the bowlers and making big runs. He made a big contribution in their 3-2 ODI win over India in India making 2 centuries against a hapless Indian attack. He is in smashing form at the moment having slammed 138* in 96 balls and 135 in 117 balls against the English in the current ODI series. Like Amla, he has the complete game and is strong all around the wicket. He might have a small weakness against spin but then he has scored 5 ODI tons against India so that might just be a notion and not entirely true. He is a fine player who already has 10 ODI hundreds in only 55 matches!

Impact Rating – 8.5/10

South Africa will look up to these two to provide quick starts and provide a solid launching pad from where their big hitters like De Villiers and Miller can capitalize and launch a massive attack in the middle overs. The left hand, right hand combination will prove to be a handful and any team which has to do well against the Protea team will have to make solid plans to dislodge them early else they will have no chance in the match.

Hashim Amla brings out the Dead Bat!!

As South Africa suffered humiliating loss after loss in the 4 Test Match Series, another big defeat was on the cards and another 4 day finish loomed large as India set South Africa a mountain to climb.

But their captain, Hashim Amla, batted and batted and is still at the crease with 23* off a staggering 207 balls. Giving him company is Superman AB De Villiers who is himself playing a stone-walling innings and he is 11* from 91 balls.

It is set to be a classic final day at the Kotla tomorrow, will the South African resistance last or will the Indian spinners have the final laugh?

Best ODI Batsmen of 2014

With the ICC Cricket World Cup scheduled for 2015, all the teams were focussed on ODI cricket in 2014 so as to get their permutations and combinations sorted out for the mega event.

Below are the Top 5 Batsmen of 2014 who were at their very best all through the year.

1. Kumar Sangakkara - The Lankan run machine made telling contributions right through the year and was super consistent. Getting him out was nigh on impossible and he plundered 1256 runs in just 28 matches at an average of over 46 and a strike rate of nearly 90 runs per 100 balls! He capped off his stellar year with a ton at his home ground in Palekelle against England in what was his second last ODI match in Sri Lanka.

2. Angelo Mathews - The Sri Lankan captain led from the front all of 2014, he was the architect in chief of Sri Lanka's ODI success along with Sanga. Angelo was the Sri Lankan version of Superman as he scored runs, took wickets, captained his side to Asia Cup win, blanked England both home and away, beat Pakistan and Bangladesh in bilateral series! He scored 1244 runs in 32 matches at a strike rate of around 90 and an average of almost 63!

3. Virat Kohli - Virat had another superb year and he was one of the only the 3 batsmen who scored 1000 in the calender year. He scored 1054 runs in 21 matches at an average of 59 striking at nearly 100.

4. Tillakaratne Dilshan - Dilshan often appeared rusty but never seemed to be away from the runs. He always found a way to score and battled his way through most of the year. He also fielded like a 16 year old and was as alert as a panther in the point region. He fell just short of 1000 run milestone raking up 990 runs in 25 appearances at an impressive average of over 40 and a strike rate of over 85.

5. Hashim Amla - Amla had a solid 2014 and he continued to pile up the runs in the format that many said he would struggle in. He ended the year scoring 892 runs in mere 18 matches with an average of over 50 and a strike rate of over 80!

Special Mention
